Thermoplastics are used in this procedure and are heated past their glass transition temperature. This material is then deposited layer-by-layer by an extrusion head, which follows a tool-path defined by CAM software, and is built from the bottom up. Using extrusion technology by depositing a thin bead of material to produce part layers, FDM prototypes result in very durable parts.
FDM is often used when form and function may be more important because the strength of these parts is comparable to injection molded parts. The end prototype accurately produces featured details of the design. FDM uses thermoplastics, which are known for their heat resistance properties. Thus, FDM prototypes are often used in aviation applications. FDM has become an ideal process for the direct manufacture of assembly jigs and fixtures.
