FDM Technical Overview

Most often, thermoplastics are used in this procedure and are heated past their glass transition temperature.  This material is then deposited layer-by-layer by an extrusion head, which follows a tool-path defined by CAM software, and is built from the bottom up.  The end prototype accurately produces featured details of the design. FDM uses thermoplastics, which are known for their heat resistance properties. Thus, FDM prototypes are often used in aviation applications.
